Drug Uses

Abilify is classiied as a new class atypical antipsychotic. Like other medications of this class, Abilify is used for mental disorders managing, but namely this antipsychotic agent is more preferable in case of weight problems, cardiovascular diseases, and other conditions.

Abilify tablets can be taken alone or as a complement to:

• Anticonvulsants, to control the depressive episodes as part of bipolar 1 disorder (up to 12 months).
• Antidepressants, when previous treatment of unipolar affective disorder or MDD was ineffective (only for adults).

Monotherapy with Abilify is intended for the management of such chronic brain diseases, as schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, irritability and short temper in autism spectrum disorders.

The dosage regimen for all categories of patients should be limited to a single administration of one Abilify 30 mg dose per day. The recommended dosage for adults is 10 to 30 mg per day. A dose of Abilify 10 mg per day is prescribed to children only if necessary.

Missed Dose

If the day's almost gone when you realized you had missed the usual time for pills intake, the patient should continue his/her normal dosing schedule. Though, she or he should take Abilify as soon as possible, if only a few hours passed.

More Information

Each taken Abilify pill is active for about three days. Lengthening or reducing the dosing interval negatively affects the treatment of mental disorders. The optimum effect is achieved after about two weeks of continuous treatment with this antipsychotic agent.

Storage

To avoid moisture ingress, antipsychotic Abilify should be kept in an original package at controlled room temperature, not exceeding 30°C.

Warnings

Antipsychotic treatment with Abilify tablets, especially in the first few weeks, can include careful monitoring of the patients’ behavior (usually in the young). Abilify is not contraindicated in patients over 65 years, but its use should be restricted and controlled.

Before a patient starts taking Abilify pills, she or he may require diagnostic tests to determine the blood level of lipids, to identify any problems with hematopoiesis, heart or blood vessels (especially in the brain), to evaluate the potential for alcohol or drugs abuse, diagnostic testing of hereditary or acquired hypersensitivity to antipsychotics.

Abilify Side Effects

The research results show that only about 5% of adult patients that use Abilify for the treatment of schizophrenia, have to stop treatment because of acathisia. Treatment with Abilify may cause such adverse events, as: extrapyramidal disorder (incl. akathisia), sedation, and restlessness in approximately 2% of adult patients with hypomania.

Children of 10 to 17 years with hypomania may respond to this atypical antipsychotic with increased fatigue, nausea, blurred vision and dizziness. Abilify may cause somnolence and tremor in some children aged 13 to 17 years. Reports were made in postmarketing experience on such adverse events of Abilify, as allergic reactions (including pruritus/urticaria), blood glucose fluctuation, and heart disorders, speech disorder, leukopenia, or myalgia.
