Drug Uses
Cardizem is an oral vasodilator with antianginal and antihypertensive activity. Cardizem tablets and capsules are used for reduction of high blood pressure and management of angina in adults and elderly patients.
Cardizem is effective in the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension, as well as in the treatment of chronic stable angina (angina pectoris) due to coronary artery disease (CAD) or coronary artery spasm.
- To prevent major adverse cardiac events, Cardizem can be used in combination with other cardiovascular agents.
- To stop acute angina attacks, Cardizem can be used together with sublingual glyceryl trinitrate (GTN or nitroglycerin).
- To enhance the antianginal and antihypertensive effects of Cardizem, the combination drug therapy may include beta-blockers (such as Propranolol).
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose of your antihypertensive / antianginal agent, take Cardizem tablet or capsule as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for the next dose of Cardizem, skip the missed dose of your medication and go back to the assigned dosing regimen.
More Information
Cardizem has antiarrhythmic effect but not approved for the treatment of arrhythmias. However, this medication can be prescribed for some patients with heart rhythm problems as an antiarrhythmic agent for «off-label» use.
Cardizem does not affect the causes and mechanisms of vasospastic or unstable angina. Therefore, to treat these forms of angina, other antianginal agents should be used instead of Cardizem.

Cardizem can reduce heart rate, cause symptomatic hypotension or reversible liver failure.
