Drug Uses

Lamictal is an oral drug having anticonvulsant action and mood-stabilizing properties. In different age and in different conditions, Lamictal is used to treat various diseases.

• As an anticonvulsant, Lamictal is used as a monotherapy or adjunctive ("add-on") therapy of partial and generalized seizures in children older than 2 years and adults.
• As a mood stabilizer, Lamictal is used to prevent depressive episodes and mood disorders in patients with bipolar disorder. Lamictal can be assigned as a maintenance therapy of Bipolar Disorder only for adult patients aged 18 and older.

Lamictal is effective in treating different types of seizures, such as: primary generalized seizures, partial-onset seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, typical absence seizures, generalized seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS).

The size of maintenance doses of Lamictal depends on many factors and can reach 400mg per day. During the first 5 weeks of antidepressant or antiepileptic therapy, the prescribed titration schedule of Lamictal should be strictly observed.

Missed dose

If you miss a Lamictal dose, take your anticonvulsant / antidepressant as soon as you remember. However, if less than 4 hours are left until the next scheduled dose, do not take Lamictal tablet and return to the assigned dosing regimen.

More Information

Lamictal can be used for initial antiepileptic therapy or prescribed for the management of epilepsy after the withdrawal of concomitant anticonvulsants. When using Lamictal in combination with valproic acid or other anti-seizure drugs, the dosage regimen of all used anticonvulsants should be chosen individually for each case.

Storage

Lamictal anti-epileptic medication should be stored in a dry place protected from bright light, at controlled room temperature not exceeding 30°C.

Warnings

Lamictal may cause severe rash, which requires the withdrawal of this anticonvulsant in approximately 0.8% of children and 0.3% of adults with epilepsy. When using Lamictal in combination with valproate, the risk of severe rash, which requires hospitalization, increases to 1.2%.

When using Lamictal for mood stabilization in bipolar disorder, the risk of severe rash is lower than while treating epilepsy and varies from 0.08% (monotherapy) to 0.13% (combination therapy).*

Lamictal Side Effects

Adverse effects of Lamictal are usually mild and occur only in the first two weeks of the therapy. Just 3% of patients with epilepsy stop using Lamictal because of dizziness and headache. Other common adverse effects of Lamictal include weakness, nausea, rash, somnolence, blurred vision, double vision, ataxia, coryza and sore throat. Some children aged 2 to 16 years using Lamictal for epilepsy treatment, may complain of somnolence, vomiting, diarrhea, infection, pyrexia, accidental injury, abdominal pain and tremor.
